My husband began researching ancestors for his father\'s 97 birthday. He found a Sir Knight Roger Foster who is associated with Featherstone. I want to give my husband (Roger Foster) a surprise birthday present of a trip to see the castle and other interesting sights in the area.

Tynemouth Castle

After living in Heaton for 12 years, I have now decided to move to the coast - specifically Tynemouth.
I have a little one now, and can think of nothing better than having Long Sands and the Priory in our lives every day. I stumbled across your site, but have spent an hour browsing and am full of inspiration now!

I had no idea there were so many castles to visit here!

Coming from South Africa I am still really astounded by the idea of seeing anything so old - wonderful, thank you for a great resource!

Hi there, I just wanted to let you know about a challenge I have set myself to visit every castle in Northumberland this year with my toddler and I\'m finding your site so very useful for finding information on all the sites! I had no idea a) how many there were and b) how many are a private residence but fingers crossed we will see them all.

Thank you for all your virtual help :)

Cartington Castle and Rothbury Village

This is just to thank you for your wonderful, and useful, photos of Rothbury and Cartington Castle which I have just discovered after a visit to explore the castle.
I managed some with my digicamera in late sunshine, but not up to your quality.

I came to renew my faint memories of the site which was once owned by a connection of my family, who sold it to Armstrong about 1883.
I expect to explore your site much further

The Alcock Becks, Thomas, then William (born Towers) mostly lived at Esthwaite - the house is now a YH. (08)

Swinburne Castle

Please enter your comments?

My name is Betty Crossland (nee Hall). I now live in Yorkshire, but originated from Tyneside.
I wondered if you know Swinburne Castle was used as a holiday resort for Second World War workers? I think the family who had lived there went to Canada for the duration, but the Castle gave lots of women a wonderful break from their war work.
I stayed there and had wonderful times with both the workers, and the staff who ran them. I was aged about 16 years old when I went, which would have been in the early 40’s.
We had a member of staff who could tell hair raising Ghost stories, and used to tell the girls, (only females went) these stories before they went to bed. The cobbled way from kitchen to the bedrooms, we called Wattling Street, and I remember it being so frightening dashing down there after the story nights!
The house was also the venue for village dances and special events, which we used to organise during our week there. I particularly remember VE day as being a great day at the castle. A basket of dressing up clothes was found in the attic, and we dressed up and celebrated in style!
The girls who went will be my age now (ancient - nearing 90, but mostly still feeling 60ish!) but all the news recently about the war jogged my memory into reminiscing. I wonder if anyone else remembers those visits?

I\'ve used your site previously when telling people where to walk on the Wall, your guide to the walk from Once Brewed up the Whin Sill and over to Housesteads is an amazing resource, and that is one of my favourite walks.

The images you have gathered on your walks are very impressive.

I recently found out via family research that my great grandmother Alice Maude Dryden worked in the castle when she was 12 years old in 1865.

Of course I want to visit it now someday.

Thank you for your artistic coverage of the castle.
