The Easter Bunny
by M. Josephine Todd, 1909

There's a story quite funny,
About a toy bunny,
And the wonderful things she can do;
Every bright Easter morning,
Without warning,
She colors eggs, red, green, or blue.

Some she covers with spots,
Some with quaint little dots,
And some with strange mixed colors, too --
Red and green, blue and yellow,
But each unlike his fellow
Are eggs of every hue.

And it's odd, as folks say,
That on no other day
In all of the whole year through,
Does this wonderful bunny,
So busy and funny,
Color eggs of every hue.

If this story you doubt
She will soon find you out,
And what do you think she will do?
On the next Easter morning
She'll bring you without warning,
Those eggs of every hue.

Christmas Joys

Evergreen boughs that fill our homes
With fragrant Christmas scents,
Hearts filled with the loving glow
That Christmas represents;

Christmas cookies, turkeys stuffed,
Festive holly berry,
Little faces bright with joy,
Loved ones being merry;

Parties, songs, beribboned gifts,
Silver bells that tinkle,
Christmas trees and ornaments,
Colorful lights that twinkle;

Relatives waiting with open arms
To smile and hug and kiss us;
These are some of the special joys
That come along with Christmas.

Candles are a gift of light,
A tiny sun, a bit of star.
No other dancer in the night
Dances with such sheer delight,
Little souls serene and bright,
Each a glimpse of what we are
Shining innocent and pure.

Loving Clouds

How I love to watch the clouds
Peacefully, peacefully drifting by
Silently upon the breeze
They ease across the clear blue sky.

How they build and roll and tumble
Just like angels out to play
Dancing with the sylphs and fairies
Head o'er heels along the way.

Each new shape is quite amusing:
Puffs to great majestic towers
Building for their loving gift
To bless the earth with vital showers.

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).

The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom,
and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1.
This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning
of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death.
Celts believed that on the night before the new year,
the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred.
On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain,
when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.
In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops,
Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits
made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future.
For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world,
these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction
during the long, dark winter. On a spooky Halloween night,

In the second half of the nineteenth century,
America was flooded with new immigrants.
These new immigrants, especially the millions of Irish fleeing Ireland's potato famine of 1846,
helped to popularize the celebration of Halloween nationally.
Taking from Irish and English traditions,
Americans began to dress up in costumes and go house to house asking for food or money,
a practice that eventually became today's "trick-or-treat" tradition.
Young women believed that, on Halloween,
they could divine the name or appearance of their future husband by doing tricks with yarn,
apple parings, or mirrors.

In the late 1800s, there was a move in America to mold Halloween
into a holiday more about community and neighborly get-togethers,
than about ghosts, pranks, and witchcraft.

Halloween, one of the world's oldest holidays,
is still celebrated today in several countries around the globe.

The autumn rite is commemorated in the United Kingdom,
although with a surprising and distinctive British twist.
In Mexico, Latin America, and Spain, All Souls' Day,
the third day of the three-day Hallowmas observance,
is the most important part of the celebration for many people.
In Ireland and Canada, Halloween,
which was once a frightening and superstitious time of year,
is celebrated much as it is here in the United States,
with trick-or-treating, costume parties, and fun for all ages.
We in America celebrate Halloween as a Fall Festival
where Children go to carnivals
and play games and are given candy
Many churches have fall festivals and encourage children
to dree up in cute costumes
instead of scary ones. Many still go out
and "Trick or treat" homes in neighborhoods.

Halloween Night
When Goblins and witches come out to fight,
When children go out to say "Trick or Treat",
When goblins and witches and people meet.
Around the town loud noises roar,
And when you hear the sound,
"Knocking" at your door.
Should you open it?
Should you be scared?
Trick or Treaters are everywhere!
But don't you worry,
And don't you fright,
Its only one day,
One evening,
Its Halloween Night!
